Towards Functional Freedom of the Voice
Hi, I’m Jacobi.
I’m a vocal coach based in Montréal, specializing in functional vocal training—
a physiologically grounded approach that emphasizes positive reinforcement, non-aesthetic judgment, and play. My goal is to guide individuals toward functional vocal freedom by strengthening and balancing the muscles that transform our thoughts into sound.

FAQ
-
Each 30-minute lesson starts with a brief warm up followed by a series of selected vocal exercises, guided with piano accompaniment. Together, we intentionally explore various vowel, pitch, and rhythmic combinations to connect the physical sensation of healthy singing with the sound.
My studio is a space of positive reinforcement, non-aesthetic judgment, and PLAY!

Functional vocal training is a methadology developed by renowned vocal pedagogue Cornelius L. Reid. The approach is based on Italian methods of the pre-scientific era combined with modern concepts of physiology, acoustics, and psychology.
The goal of this approach is to bring all the muscle systems involved in the process of phonation into a state of equilibrium.
-
This approach is suitable for all voices and experience levels. No prior musical experience is required.
I strive to provide a safe space for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ community members.
-
Yes! I offer virtual sessions via Zoom or FaceTime. A high-speed Wi-Fi connection is required for best audio and video quality.
-
While I am not a speech pathologist and do not offer clinical gender-affirming voice therapy, I do have experience working with gender-diverse individuals on HRT who use singing as a way to explore their evolving instruments.
Because singing and speech share the same musculature, the precise and vigorous exercises that benefit singers can often—but not always—carry over into speech habits.
-
Each person has a unique voice, and its function varies daily due to psychological, physiological, and environmental factors.
One-on-one coaching provides a more effective training method by meeting individuals where they are, rather than relying on the generic, one-size-fits-all approach of many online courses and YouTube tutorials.

Jacobi is an incredible vocal coach! Our lessons are helping me develop some foundational skills that I had been missing as a previously self-taught singer. After a few months of lessons, I am finding it easier to access different parts of my vocal range with less strain and self-consciousness. Jacobi’s warm and encouraging teaching style brings out the best in me as a singer. Highly recommend!

My classes with Jacobi have reshaped how I sing at every level. The classes are so much fun and during the first class, Jacobi identifies exactly what you need to work on and focuses on that in the following classes. I would highly recommended him to singers of all experience levels.

I’ve been to three different vocal coaches and Jacobi’s approach has inspired me the most. I’ve gained the confidence to make the music I like and sing in front of strangers which is something I’ve always wanted to do but wasn’t sure was possible.

I cannot speak more highly of Jacobi as an instructor—and more generally, as a human. Their passion for music is undeniable, and that energy is contagious. As a student, I find myself inspired and energized in every lesson. Jacobi is incredibly knowledgeable and offers an inviting, warm, non-judgmental learning environment. I've deeply appreciated all of their encouragement along my own musical journey—simply the best!

I had the chance to take regular classes with Jacobi for a couple of Months. The work we did together gave me strength and confidence in my voice. We worked on connecting both my deeper and higher registers which helped me navigate through the spectrum, discovering new places I didn’t know of and gave me freedom to place my voice where it makes me feel comfortable. Jacob was very loving, kind, supportive and focused, I really appreciated working with them! If we lived in the same city, I'd probably still take sessions!

Since working with Jacobi, my voice has improved immensely. His approach to coaching is completely different from anything I’ve tried before—it’s intuitive, practical, and really helps you understand how your voice works. For me, that’s meant discovering parts of my range I didn’t even know I had. Jacobi makes lessons fun, supportive, and low-pressure, so you feel comfortable taking risks and trying new things. I do my lessons virtually, and even though we’re not in the same room, they’re just as effective as in-person sessions. If you’re looking to develop your voice in a way that feels natural and actually works, I can’t recommend Jacobi enough!
